Inflatable gorillas, raw chicken and a good film

Following a weekend of film with the Oscars, I thought I would take a look at one of our local cinemas.

Pictured below left is what was the UCI cinema, now an Odeon.

It was part of the Port Solent development, a luxury housing estate and marina located on the western side of Horsea Island, in the north of Portsmouth Harbour.

It was built in the late 1980s on reclaimed land, part of which was formerly used as a landfill site with the remainder being marshland.

After an evening watching Pocahontas – or sci-fi horror film Species, if you were brave enough – filmgoers could go to the Charbar, siutated near the entrance of The Boardwalk, for a raw chicken breast, or perhaps a partially-cooked rack of ribs.

The restaurant set itself apart from its neighbours by allowing customers to cook their own meats, but it clearly wasn’t a hit with punters – it is now a Chimichanga.
