South Parade Pier, Southsea, has been bought with the promise of recapturing its glory days. What a bonus that will be if it happens.
Before the 1974 ‘Tommy’ fire there were two stages – the theatre stage and the end-of-the pier open air stage. Many of you will recall those heady days when famous names appeared at the theatre and the Miss Southsea beauty contest was held on the open stage.
On warm summer evenings dances were held under the stars. Dinner dances (remember them?) were also held in the theatre with everyone sitting around the edge of stage after the meal had been served.
