Pompey’s mighty blue exodus was preparing to sweep north into the red sea of Anfield in the fourth round of the League Cup, a match which has entered Pompey folklore.

Legendary Liverpool manager Bob Paisley praised Pompey fans for their dedication and strength, as they planned to take 12,000 with them.

And Paisley promised Liverpool would not underestimate Pompey. But even as the game slipped away from the Blues – they lost 4-1 – fans continued to urge them on until the end.

Supporters here are holding souvenir editions of The News, published on the eve of the match.
