When John McGregor enlisted the help of Remember When five years ago he could not have dreamed of the response he would get.
He had just written a book about his times in the RAF based at Thorney Island, near Emsworth and was hoping to organise a reunion.
Now, on May 9, he will hold the fourth reunion in the sailing club at Thorney when more than 100 old mates are due to turn up at what is now an army base.
His first book, Fairy Tales of an SAC, was a witty account of his five years at the former RAF base in the late 1960s and early ’70s.
John, who lives in Spain, says: ‘The original Fairy Tales of an SAC has now sold more than 1,500 copies, in the process attracting many great comments about those halcyon days of life and laughter.’
Four years on John has written a sequel called Fairy Tales Come True! which features both original comments about the first book, plus details of what has happened to the characters, male and female, he wrote about and how they are today, featuring colour photos from both those old days and of the recent reunions.
John’s tales are from home and abroad, in uniform and out, and told with great humour and candour.
In 2010 John came from Spain to publicise the book via Remember When and sign copies in Waterstones.
The lads and lasses he had written about and other former colleagues heard about the book, bought a copy and got back in touch with John.
As a direct result of that interest a first reunion was held in May 2012 in the sailing club at Thorney, a venue which had always been a social centre back in the old days and the reunion has now become a successful annual event.
John will launch his new book at the reunion on May 9. The book is also available on Amazon, ISBN no ISBN-10: 1508497168, RSP £13.95.
