THIS WEEK IN 1972: Labourer in a hole load of troubleÂ

A Portsmouth labourer was rescued after being buried while working on a sewer in Grafton Street, Mile End. Firemen and workmates dug with shovels and their hands to save Peter Ayling, of Bradford Avenue, Southsea. He was working with two other men in the pit when he was covered with earth, bricks and rubble. The two workmates uncovered his head before calling for help. Firemen had to work upside down to release his legs. Peter suffered multiple injuries but was '˜making a satisfactory recovery' according to the Royal Portsmouth Hospital a day later.
