THIS WEEK IN 1990: Free meal brings comfort for wives

Have your say

A trouble shared was a trouble halved over a slap-up lunch for the wives of sailors serving in the Gulf and their children in Southsea.

The meal, provided free by Southsea restauranteur Rod Tabor, was a rare treat for many of the wives, and a chance for the children to make new friends.

The 12 women and their children were allowed to choose anything from the menu at Pizza Express, Osborne Road.

As they ate the conversation returned to husbands and dads in the Gulf.

Julie Coverley, 25, said: ‘Something like this builds your spirits up a little.

‘Even though it’s not going to make things better, you know someone cares,’ she added.
