BRIAN KIDD: How to get the best out of sandy soil

Have your say

Unsurprisingly, considering we own a shop full of decorative accessories and general gorgeousness for the home, my favourite part in any home furnishings project is the accessorising and ‘finishing off’ bit as it’s the bit that pulls everything together and turns it into loveliness.

It’s the finishing touches that turn the ordinary into the extraordinary and it’s why I love trimmings collections – the beads, braids, pom-poms, bobbles, tassels and cords used to embellish soft furnishings.

Trimmings can be used in so many ways to add detail, interest and style to cushions, blinds and curtains.

A row of dangly beads along the bottom edge of a roman blind can pick up an accent colour, catch the light and add a playful or elegant detail to something otherwise very plain.

A wide braid set a couple of inches in from the leading and bottom edge of a simple plain curtain can transform the curtain by adding texture and colour, which can be picked up elsewhere in scatter cushions or blinds or other accent pieces.

Some people associate trimmings with fussiness and gaudiness, but they have come on a long way in the last few years and can be as bold and theatrical as they can be subtle and understated.

Two new trimmings
collections to look out for are Harlequin’s Arabella collection and Sander-
son’s Trimmings Volume I and II.

Both can be viewed on- line but are best seen in real life to appreciate the colour and detail.

In gorgeous jewel colours, specially designed and coloured to complement the extensive range of Harlequin fabrics, Arabella Trimmings will give added glamour and luxury to curtains, blinds, upholstery, cushions and accessories.

It is further enhanced by two stunning tie-backs: a lavish tassel tie back and a contemporary bobble tie-back.

Sanderson’s first ever trimmings collection includes seven versatile trimming styles including simple picot braids, bobble fringes, ruffles and beads.

Almost 100 trimmings are presented in 17 colour sets including linen, duck egg, charcoal and plum.

The pictures show cushions embellished with trimmings from these two ranges; note how bold and playful the Harlequin cushions look and how elegant and sophisticated the Sanderson cushions look: the trimmings can help to define the look you want.
