In future, grow with love not your purse

St Valentine's Day has been and gone and at least two of the city's supermarkets (one at Farlington the other very close to Fratton Park) were awash with cheap leftover blooms.

Large bunches on sale at 94p reduced from £15 with a shelf life of seven more days! Good for the bargain-hunter, but sad too.

They have probably been flown from Holland to Mexico for treatment before being flown back to the UK in time for an ignominious end.

Buy from your local florist, especially if they stock locally-grown blooms. Ask them.

How much more romantic (and ethical, not to mention green) would it be to plant a few spring-flowering bulbs in a suitable planter to present to your loved one, grown with love rather than from the wallet.

The same goes for everyday needs. Veg grown from seeds are far healthier for the person and the planet than jet-setting greens.
