Prune just the top two inches off lavender.

Prune lavender. Use shears so you get a lovely rounded shape. Use the shears to cut off the top two inches of growh and all the new shoots will have flowers next summer. And keep in mind all types of bees love lavender.

Plant Dutch iris in pots, five around the edge of a five-inch diameter pot and keep them in the greenhouse.

Keep Autumn Bliss and other autumn-fruiting raspberries moist. If given a liquid feed now, they will continue to fruit for many weeks.

Pick blackberries regularly to prevent berries from dropping on the soil otherwise lots of unwanted blackberry plants will appear. Tie in those great long, fast-growing stems for these will provide next year's fruit. And don't forget to make some bramble jelly; it tastes wonderful on top of vanilla ice cream.

Remove yellowing leaves on the lower stems of Brussels sprouts. These make good compost.

Take cuttings of rosemary and lavender, side shoots five inches long. Trim off all leaves apart from one- inch depth at the top and firm them into a seed sowing compost adding 25 per cent sharp sand. Keep them shaded. This is the best time to get them rooted.

If there is a gap in a border, have a look at the large pots of pom and spray chrysanthemums at the garden centre. Choose the colour and type you favour but choose a plant which has only a few flowers but masses of buds. If you choose wisely, those plants will still be in flower in six weeks.

Make sure Michaelmas daisies are well supported and spray the foliage with Copper Mixture to prevent powdery mildew. Michaelmas daisies are making a comeback. It is difficult trying to find them at garden centres.Follow the directions on the green plastic bottle for treating copper deficiency.
