Although his parents were English, he was there throughout the Second World War, even though their town was occupied by the Germans.

Gerald moved to Somerset when he was 16.

The couple met through mutual friends and were married on March 28, 1952, and even had some snow on their wedding day.

They honeymooned in Southsea and loved the place so much that they moved here to start a new life a couple of years later.

Now living in Waterlooville, Gerald was a site foreman with John Lays Builders for many years, and Sylvia was a housewife and mother bringing up their only daughter, Christine, now 55.
