Enterprising children are literally eating the fruits of their labour thanks to a successful primary school eco club.

Boys and girls at Langstone Juniors are growing raspberries, blackcurrants, strawberries, tomatoes, sweet corn, carrots, parsnips, rhubarb, courgettes, apples, pears, plums and much more – which they are then taking home to eat and cook with.

Their diligent gardening is all part of the bigger idea behind the scheme, which teaches composting and recycling materials like lorry tyres to create planters or bottles to make bird feeders.

Olivia Starr, nine, is passionate about the eco club. She says: ‘I’m really into nature so I love learning more about fruits and vegetables in such a fun way.

‘It’s been an amazing experience to plant a seed, water it and look after it, and then see it become a plant that produces things we can eat and use in our cooking.

‘You can see the cycle of life in front of your eyes – seeds growing into plants which then produce more seeds to create even more plants.

‘It’s brilliant that we can take our fruits and vegetables home. I felt really pleased with myself when I grew tomatoes and sliced them up to put in my sandwich.’

Lauren McAuley, nine, has been a member of the club since it was launched two years ago. She says: ‘All the things we grow taste really nice, and it’s good that we are learning about where all the food comes from.

‘Since I joined the club I have been eating much more healthy foods which makes me feel better.

‘Recently I enjoyed making the pumpkin soup, which had a lot of tasty flavours in it.’

Langstone’s eco club which runs every Tuesday for an hour after school was the brainchild of Year Three teacher Sarah Cutler, who likes to grow her own food at home.

She says: ‘We’ve got great grounds at this school and I thought the eco club would really encourage outdoor learning.

‘The children love the fact that they can grow something like a pumpkin from a seed and using compost, and then cut it and add garlic and onions to make it into a delicious soup.’
