This year is the Year of the Dragon, representing good fortune and intense power.

To celebrate Chinese New Year, there will be a procession of three dancing Chinese lions around Gunwharf Quays on Sunday, plus martial arts displays and Chinese dance displays.

Plus there will be Chinese brush painting and calligraphy demonstrations in Central Square.

All are free to view and events run from 11.10am until 3.20pm. See gunwharf-quays.com.

Also, the International and EU Students’ Society from the University of Portsmouth is hosting an authentic Chinese New Year stage show on Sunday at the New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth.

Starting at 7.30pm, tickets cost £5 (£3 concessions). Call the box office on (023) 9264 9000.
