Sylvia Kennett first spotted husband John on the football pitch and the pair have been fans of the game all their lives.

Sylvia grew up in Hambledon and John played for the local team on the pitch in front of her house.

They started going out when she was 16 and worked in the local grocery shop.

‘He sent a message to the shop to see if I would like to meet him and go out,’ recalls Sylvia.

The couple were married in the freezing winter of 1963 and celebrate their golden wedding on Saturday.

‘The snow had just about gone by then but it was very cold. It was a lovely day though,’ says Sylvia.

The couple, who live in Denmead, count Pompey as their team but also follow other clubs in the south as well as Liverpool.

They also love line dancing and John belongs to a metal detecting club. A builder who has always worked with his brothers, he is still working at 76.

They will be celebrating at the weekend with their children and grandchildren.
