An introduction by the bride’s brother led this couple to find love and a long-lasting marriage.
Joy and Peter Cushing celebrated their golden wedding anniversary earlier this month.
The couple were married on August 12 1961, in Stoke Road, Gosport.
Joy, who was born and bred in the town, worked at Liptons Grocery Store in High Street and Peter, originally from Great Bookham, in Surrey, was stationed at St George’s Barracks with REME.
Joy and Peter continued to write to each other after they met – even when Peter was posted to Germany.
After their marriage, Peter worked as a tool maker and Joy continued as a shop assistant. For the first eight years they lived in Hayling Island but Joy got homesick and they moved back to Gosport in 1969.
Peter enjoys breeding budgerigars and has shown his birds nationally. Together then ran a majorette corp for 30 years.
