Rachel Merrit is this week’s We Can Do It T-shirt winner for her determination to help women who want to start a family.

Rachel, 34, of St James’s Road, Southsea, will be taking part in a six-day trek to raise money for Genesis Research Trust, a charity that carries out research to improve the health of women and babies.

Mum-of-two Rachel wants to help other women experience the joys of motherhood by fundraising.

She said: ‘I feel so fortunate that I have two children and didn’t have any complications.

‘But I know there are women out there who don’t have it that easy, and it’s them I want to help.’

Rachel, who works as a respiratory nurse at St Richard’s Hospital, Chichester, will be trekking in the Himalayan mountains in September.

Each day 35 women will be walking around 20km. At one point they will be 2,800 metres high.

Rachel said: ‘I’ve started my training. I’ve been going to the gym and walking on the South Downs.

‘I’m quite nervous, but excited too. Above all I really want to raise money for the charity to help other women.’

Rachel has set herself a target of raising £3,200. A comedy night is being held at Gunwharf Quays’ nightclub Tiger Tiger on April 27 and tickets cost £22.
