The inaugural World Malbec Day takes place this Sunday.
This dark, spicy red may not be for everyone, but it has become Argentina’s calling card and is almost the wine of choice to serve with steak.
Originally from Bordeaux and still found in south-west France, particularly in the region of Cahors, it is now associated with Argentina. Although prices are rising, it can still offer excellent value for money.
Fina Flichman Malbec Reserva 2009, Mendoza (Waitrose £7.69, on offer at £5.69 until May 4) has plums, red fruits and a spicy finish. Urban Malbec 2010, Mendoza (Hermitage Cellars £7.75) has black fruits, soft tannins and a hint of vanilla.
