Cheryl Gibbs is very rarely lost for words, but her wedding and honeymoon left her speechless.
The 32-year-old television presenter and producer from Copnor, who also writes a weekly column for The News, exchanged vows with long-term boyfriend Matt Kingston, 35, at St Mary’s Church in Fratton.
Cheryl says: ‘I approached Matt as we walked up to the altar and he had a tear in his eye. That set me off.’
Mr and Mrs Kingston then had their reception at Southend Barns near Chichester, before jet-setting on a two-leg honeymoon to Dubai and Mauritius.
‘I was most surprised by Dubai – it was like nothing I have ever seen before,’ she says. ‘It is like they have taken the best buildings and food from around the world and put it in one city. There are buildings that resemble the Chrysler Building in New York and Big Ben in London, and they even have a mini Venice where you travel by gondola.’
While they were there, Cheryl’s favourite part og the honeymoon was going on a 4x4 desert safari, which included surfing down sand dunes.
We have led a single life while we have been together – we are faithful to each other, but we have never stopped each other doing thingsCheryl Kingston
The couple met on a night out after Matt impressed Cheryl with his dance moves.
‘We met in what was Route 66 in Palmerston Road when he was 19 and I was 17,’ says Cheryl.
‘I walked into the club with my girlfriends and Matt had cleared the middle of the dancefloor. I have never seen someone dance like that.
‘I remember saying to my friend “I’m going to marry that man” – cheesy and clichéd, but it’s true.’
Matt and Cheryl swapped numbers – and the rest is history, luckily.
‘Years later Matt said he wasn’t going to call me, but something changed his mind,’ says Cheryl.
Cheryl – known as the Girl About Town to her readers – says the secret to their relationship is independence.
‘I tell people that we have led a single life while we have been together – we are faithful to each other, but we have never stopped each other doing things.’
