Only in Britain could there be a National Pie Week (March 7– 13) and it’s been a great excuse to taste a range of pies from Pieminster and a selection of wines to find some good matches.
Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Marlborough (widely available £9.99) with gooseberry, tropical fruits and zesty notes went really well with the delicious Chicken of Aragon Pie (£3.50 Sainsbury’s).
With royal weddings in mind, the Kate and Wills Pie (£3.50 Sainsbury’s) was best matched by a Errazuriz Pinot Noir ‘Wild Ferment’ 2009, Casablanca Valley (£12.99 Majestic) – and the Matador pie (£3.50 Sainsbury’s) was brilliant with this week’s top tipple.
Cune Crianza 2007, Rioja
Classic Rioja with red fruits and a little spice, with an elegant, well balanced finish.
