'Unimpressed' boxer dogs Ethel and Olive clinch victory in The News' One Summer's Day competition for 2020

AS AUGUST’S heatwave began to cool they looked just as miffed as the rest of us.

Now boxer dogs Ethel and Olive’s reactions to the waning weather have won their owner the top spot in ourannual photo competition.

The News can today announce Tracey Devenish, 53, as the victor of the One Summer’s Day contest for 2020.

Her entry, pictured, made the judges smile as they deliberated over the dozens of photos sent in by readers.

The competition stipulated all pictures were taken on Saturday, August 15 – but only one could win.

Tracey said: ‘It wasn’t a great day for sunshine but Ethel and Olive love to cling on to any they can get throughout the day.

‘We’re forever taking photos and I just looked at them and saw they had these very unimpressed looks on their faces.

‘They’re probably spoiled brats really, but they mean everything to us. We don’t have children and they bring so much joy to our family.’

Picture desk assistant Deborah Croker was part of the team which chose the winning photo.

She said: ‘The expressions here are brilliant.

‘I really like the look on both dogs’ faces because they look a bit like they’re fed up.

‘I like the lighting, colours and the shadow on the wall and it's a funny image.’

Animals in the sunshine was a theme that also made the competition’s second-place spot, clinched by photographer Ashley Harley.

Ashley’s image featured three horses – Daisy, Lola and Ocean – loving each other’s company in the sunshine.

Chris Richardson’s not-so-sunny shot of Chloe, three, playing in the rain in the gardens of Southsea’s Cumberland House Natural History Museum was the judges’ choice for third place.
