THIS WEEK IN 1971: Old Portsmouth hotel rejected

Planning permission for a hotel in Old Portsmouth was refused by the development and estates committee, because it did not recognise the character, environment, and atmosphere of the area.

It was also thought to intrude in its domestic scale, and ‘failed to recognise the historic street pattern of the architecture of the city’s most important conservation area.’

But, members agreed they were not against the principle of having a hotel in Old Portsmouth.
