Majestic has its own label – Definition – comprising 12 wines between £7.49 and £13.49 representing what it believes are the most important wine styles. The name and labelling are clever and this isn’t just another own-label range. It has aimed higher than supermarkets.
Definition Pinot Grigo 2014, Fruili (£9.99; £7.49 as part of a mixed six) has citrus fruit, a touch of minerals and more texture than you often find at this level. Definition Cotes du Rhone 2014 (£11.99; £8.99 as part of a mixed six) is a blend of grenache, syrah and carignan with lots of spice and blackcurrants. Great with a casserole.
My top tipple is Definition Chardonnay 2014, Limoux (£12.99; £9.74 as part of a mixed six). Limoux, in the south of France, is often the source of well-made, good-value chardonnay. This is lovely with a hint of apple pie; a creamy palate with well-balanced citrus acidity. Ideal with roast chicken.
