24-hour relay race in Portsmouth to raise cash for cancer charity

MORE than 100 people will be taking part in a relay for 24 hours to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

This weekend Relay for Life Portsmouth will see 32 teams complete laps from midday on Saturday until the same time on Sunday.

In its 19th year, the event celebrates the lives of people who have battled cancer and a lunch is held for the survivors on the Saturday.

As well as the relays, which can be walked or run, the two-day event has live music, games, tug-of-war and sports activities. There will also be a cancer awareness area with activities to increase people’s knowledge of the various types of cancer.

This year’s theme is based on the movies, with people taking part expected to dress as their favourite film characters.

Last year’s event raised £87,000.

Relay for Life is being held at the Mountbatten Centre, at Alexandra Park.
