Abandoned bonfires putting Gosport lives at risk, warn firefighters

FIRE crews have said reckless contractors are putting lives at risk by abandoning bonfires.

Firefighters in Gosport have been called out four times in just three days to the same site off Privett Road, in Lee-on-the-Solent – with the latest incident on Friday evening.

Workers have been clearing scrubland in the area and using bonfires to dispose of the debris but have left the area unattended each time.

Watch manager Sean Ratcliffe has warned the contractors, adding: ‘By leaving fires like this they’re taking away valuable fire cover needed for the people of Gosport for a couple of hours while we go and deal with it.’
