A MAJOR road was closed after a car came off the highway and hit a tree.

Three men were trapped inside a BMW car after it crashed into a tree off Western Road, Northarbour, Portsmouth.

The accident happened at about 3.15pm today and police closed Western Road as emergency services gathered at the scene.

It took firefighters more than four hours to cut the three men out of the mangled wreckage.

They were taken by ambulance to Queen Alexandra Hospital for treatment.

A police spokesman said: ‘The vehicle came off the road where there are trees in the middle of the road.

‘There were three people trapped and all were conscious and breathing.

‘One of the men is believed to have serious injuries, but we don’t know what those are yet.’

Diversions have been set up and police are hoping to re-open the road shortly.
