MOTORISTS have faced another weekend of traffic jams after a major route into Portsmouth has been closed.

The bridge that connects the southbound A3(M) to the A27 closed at 10pm yesterday and will not re-open until Monday at 6am.

Drivers have faced delays of at least 30 minutes as traffic has been queuing for two miles from Junction 5 to Junction 2.

A diversion has been set up via the Rusty Cutter roundabout to the Broadmarsh Interchange at Havant where traffic joins the A27 westbound.

Congestion has also built up through Waterlooville town centre and Cosham as drivers opted to take other routes.

The work, which began on February 21, is to replace an expansion joint on the bridge and will take 11 weeks to carry out.

The bridge is also due to be closed next weekend.

James Wright, spokesman for the Highways Agency, said: ‘By carrying out the work overnight and at weekends, we are keeping disruption to a minimum.’
