AN RSPCA animal shelter is appealing for help to identify the person who dumped eight baby rabbits.

The animals were found abandoned last Saturday on the steps of the Stubbington Ark animal shelter in Ranvilles Lane, near Fareham.

They were in a plastic box that did not have enough holes in to allow the six-week-old rabbits to breathe.

Luckily a member of staff arrived for work early and found the four male and four female rabbits and got them to safety.

A spokesperson for the shelter said: ‘Air holes had been melted in to the box but these holes did not allow an adequate air supply and the weather was extremely cold, so if the rabbits had not been discovered, they would have certainly died.

‘Staff at the shelter would have been happy to have taken the rabbits in, if the owners had contacted us directly, instead of leaving them to a chance discovery.’

The rabbits are all in good health and when they are old enough they will be put up for rehoming.

Anyone with information that could lead to identifying the owners is asked to call the Stubbington Ark on 01329 667541. The Stubbington Ark is run by the RSPCA and funded by donations.

It has many different types of animals up for adoption and there are usually more than 500 animals on site at any one time. It costs £3,400 a day to maintain.
