Approval sought for further works at Gosport's Alver Valley Country Park

The '˜phase two' development proposal involves increasing the current car park provision and providing toilet facilities along with food and beverage services.

Behind the development plan is Gosport councillor Mark Hook.

Councillor Hook said: '˜This is to be the second stage in the development of the park. The park and play area has proved very popular and so a second car park is needed. We also need to provide suitable facilities for people using the park. In addition to the toilet blocks we are also looking to develop a changing facility and hoist to support adults with disabilities and their carers. There will also be a nappy changing facility.'  

The first phase of development took place in June 2016 with the opening of the '˜Western Car Park' and associated access paths and signage. The following year saw the installation of a new play area which has subsequently helped to boost visitor numbers.

The proposal would see the the current car parking facilities extended by a further 40 spaces to deal with this increased demand. The food and drinks service is proposed to include indoor and outdoor seating, drinking fountain and washing facility for dogs and boots.

The area is to be monitored by CCTV with the whole second phase development estimated to cost £700,000.

Cllr Hook believes the provision and improvement of such facilities are vital for the local community of Gosport.

'˜Gosport is one of the most densely populated parts of the county with 72  per cent of land built on. The park provides a '˜green lung' in an otherwise urban area. It promotes healthy living in an outdoor environment,' explained Cllr Hook.

He added that discussions have already taken place regarding a third phase of development which would include further walkways and the installation of '˜trim trails' '“ pieces of equipment positioned in the park which can be used for cardiovascular exercise.

'˜It is about providing countryside activities in an urban area. I would be disappointed if the proposal didn't receive unanimous approval,' said Cllr Hook.
