Beacon at Portchester for Queen's milestone

A beacon will be lit at Portchester Castle next Thursday to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday.

It will be one of more than 1,000 beacons being lit throughout the country, from churches and lighthouses to farms, country parks and village greens.

The event starts at 5.30pm and is being arranged in partnership with English Heritage.

There will be a range of activities in the castle grounds, including live music, food and drink, children’s games, face painting and make your own beacon.

The Mayor and Mayoress will lead the countdown to the lighting, which will take place (weather permitting) on top of the castle’s keep at 7.30pm.

Mayor of Fareham, Cllr Mike Ford, said: ‘This is set to be a fantastic family event as we join venues across the country to mark Her Majesty’s 90th birthday. It should be a momentous national occasion to have so many beacons being lit at the same time.’

The live music will be provided by Portsmouth- based folk band The Courtiers.
