THE A27 was closed for several hours last night after a massive fire broke out at a yard.
The blaze engulfed a large quantity of tyres at Sullivan’s Yard, at Stockbridge, Chichester.
Fire engines were called to the scene at about 10.30pm and found a large fire.
There were fears an acetylene gas cylinder on the site would explode, but firefighters managed to isolate this and cool it down.
Fire engines from Chichester, Havant, Southsea, Bognor, Selsey and Littlehampton went to tackle the blaze.
Foam was used to put out the fire.
The fire damaged two HGV trucks parked nearby.
The fire was out by 3am today and the A27 was re-opened. The fire started accidentally, but the exact cause is still being investigated.
