AROUND 40 firefighters were called to a blaze which swept through a car repair garage in Bognor yesterday.

Firefighters from Havant were called on to help fight the fire, which started at DT Autos, on Chalcroft Lane, at 11.50am.

The garage, the three cars inside it, and six cars parked outside were all destroyed.

A neighbouring bungalow was three-quarters damaged by fire, smoke, and water and some damage was also done to a further two properties.

The 19 residents in a nursing home nearby had to be evacuated as an acetylene cylinder inside the garage exploded.

The fire took five hours to put out.

Lyndi Morrison, of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said: ‘The residents were evacuated to the nearby Arun Leisure Centre. The cause of the fire was given as accidental, but we have no more detail. No-one was hurt.’
