Boom! Something the Luftwaffe failed to do in Portsmouth

Hard on the heels of yesterday's eye-catching picture of Portsmouth power station, below, here is another of the same building, but in a slightly different state.

When the enormous structure in Old Portsmouth reached the end of its life the two 300ft-high chimneys were dismantled brick by brick in 1981.

That decision was taken because of the station’s proximity to homes.

But in the picture above we have moved on about two years to the moment the main building was skillfully brought down by explosives.

Here we see part of it crashing to the ground.

The rear of the building came down soon after leaving open space in the area for the first time since the construction of the power station started almost a century before, in 1892.
