CAMPAIGNERS have lost their fight to keep a Fareham bowling alley open.

The doors of Go Bowling, in Newgate Lane, are being shut for good after the last players leave tonight due to a decline in trade.

It comes after a planning application was submitted to Fareham Borough Council by venue owner Eskmuir Securities Ltd to change its use from leisure to retail and turn it into a Matalan store. A decision has yet to be made.

Al Ashby, who is secretary for Go Bowling’s Youth Bowling Club, confirmed the news about the bowling alley’s closure to The News this evening.

Go Bowling team member Luke Astley said he was gutted but the company had been ‘supportive’ in finding employees alternative jobs.

He said the venue hadn’t been very busy this evening as not a lot of people have known that tonight was the final night of bowling.

‘It’s closing this evening,’ Mr Astley said.

‘It’s not that busy at the moment as a lot of people don’t know, it wasn’t made public not that long ago.

‘The company has posted something on social media.

‘We are gutted, but we will move on.

‘We are losing our jobs, but the company has given us loads of support finding new work and most people have jobs already.’

The facility was the only one of its kind in the area and now the nearest lanes for people to play are at Bowlplex in Gunwharf Quays.
