THE celebrations for the Spirit of Christmas Challenge 2014 got under way in Lee-on-the Solent as traders fought to win the best-dressed window competition.
Joint first place went to Solent Mobility Centre and the Lee Florist, pictured, with the total prize money of £700 being donated to the Rainbow Centre in Fareham.
Hundreds of people went to the Christmas-themed evening and took advantage of the shops being open until 8pm.
The streets were lined with craft stalls, gift stands, a snowboard simulator, organic hog roast and mini-fairground rides for younger children.
There was also a winter wonderland inflatable, Santa’s Grotto and a Punch and Judy show.
Debbie Watts, chairwoman of the Lee Business Association, said: ‘It was a fabulous evening of entertainment and fun.
‘Each year businesses in Lee take up the challenge and pool their resources and work together with the residents’ association to make this happen with the help of an army of community volunteers. The event had a great family atmosphere and really got the community together. I would like to thank everyone for all their help. It’s been amazing to have so many people wanting to help and get involved.’
The event is organised each year to support local businesses as well as give families in the area a chance to explore local shops.
