CAMPAIGNERS have overcome the first obstacle in their fight to get heavy traffic taken out of a residential area.
Portsmouth City Council officers have granted planning permission for a temporary road to be built alongside the M275 which lorries could use to access commercial land west of Tipner.

It would mean fewer vehicles having to drive down Twyford Avenue in Stamshaw, in order to access the industrial site, owned by John Henry Pounds.
Though the work has been awarded planning permission, the council owns the land where the road would go – across the former park-and-ride compound – and a separate decision needs to be made over whether official consent will be given.
The issue is likely to go before a meeting chaired by a member of the Tory cabinet to decide if the road scheme finally goes ahead.
Cllr Luke Stubbs, Tory deputy council leader, has already warned it’s very unlikely the council will give landowners’ consent as it doesn’t fit in with the long-term vision for the area.
But residents remain upbeat and hope their campaign – which has been backed by Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt – pays off.
Twyford Avenue resident Jan Sherlin, 72, said: ‘I have lived here since 1973, and this problem with the traffic has been going on for years.
‘We do realise that it’s just the planning permission that has been awarded. This is just the first step. But it’s a start.
‘It all depends on whether the council actually allows it to happen.
‘The campaign is not over, there is still a lot that needs to be sorted out.’
John Cass, chairman of Stamshaw and Tipner Neighbourhood Forum, said: ‘We have had to put up with this for the last seven or eight years.
‘At long last, common sense has prevailed. I’m delighted.
‘We now see there have been merits in doing this all long.’
Cllr Stubbs declined to comment further at this stage, but has raised concerns about how the road could increase the value of private land.
