Centre annex is named as best small projectÂ

A £620,000 community centre annex has been named one of the best new projects in the region.Â

The annex at Hayling Island Community Centre won the Best Small Commercial Project category in the Local Authority Building Control Excellence Awards for the south east.

The £620,000 project has seen a new café built as well as more space for groups and visitors.

McAndrew Martin, which has its headquarters in Portsmouth, was instructed as project manager, structural engineer and principal designer.

Lee Sergeant, from the firm, said: '˜This is an incredibly worthwhile project which has made a real difference to the lives of many people.' 

Hayling Island Community Centre, a registered charity, welcomes 2,000 people through its doors every week. The National Lottery awarded a grant of £500,000 towards the project while the community and its team of volunteers spent five years raising the rest.
