Decision to be made in days by Portsmouth planners over new state-of-the-art 1000 Lakeside hotel

A DECISION is to be made whether to approve plans for a new state-of-the-art hotel in Portsmouth.

Developer Village has designed a six-storey, 153-bed hotel which would be at 1000 Lakeside North Harbour.

Facilities would include a leisure club with a 20m swimming pool, gym and fitness studios.

A restaurant, pub, Starbucks coffee shop, conference centre, meeting area and parking for 270 cars are part of the package of proposals.

Portsmouth City Council’s planning committee will meet to decide whether to grant permission at a meeting on Wednesday, taking place in Portsmouth Guildhall on the third floor from 5pm.

A report going before councillors says the Design Review Panel finds the style and scale of the proposed building ‘acceptable’ but was ‘critical’ of aspects of the scheme.

The panel isn’t entirely happy with where the hotel would be built, and that ‘the existing trees would better screen a car park than a building’.

It adds that the entrance to the site is ‘weakened’ by the car park, and panellists were ‘disappointed’ with the external location of the bathrooms, which are considered ‘a particularly poor aspect of the design’.
