Delay over decision on future of Portsmouth off-licence

A DECISION over the future of an off-licence caught selling super-strength beers at illegal prices has been delayed.

Police have requested that Liquor Land, in London Road, North End, Portsmouth, be shut down.

The request comes after they spotted foreign brands of alcohol being sold for £1 – cheaper than the minimum price for super-strength drinks.

HMRC has also raised concerns and has seized alcohol which it thinks could have been smuggled into the UK unlawfully.

But it was revealed at a meeting of Portsmouth City Council’s licensing committee that HMRC needs more time to go over its evidence before forming a definitive view.

Councillors decided they will come back and reach a decision on April 7 so all parties are ready.

PC Pete Rackham, of Portsmouth Police Licensing Team, said in a report that Satvinder Rai and Anand Muthusamy – both involved in the running of the shop – are ‘failing to promote licensing objectives’.
