AFTER taking on a challenge to build a business in five days with £50 a student has been awarded a quarter of the company.
University of Portsmouth student James Leighfield answered the tweet of director Chris Hillary looking for someone to help him design the business’ brand.
James, 20, said: ‘I saw Chris’ tweet looking for web designers to help him and I thought it was something that was going to get people talking.’
In a bid to get his name out there James contacted Chris asking what he was looking for.
Director and part-owner Chris said: ‘There were so many people who contacted me wanting to know what the business was before they helped but James was intrigued by the idea and wanted to help.
‘Others were dismissive about the concept and some spent up to an hour discussing why they thought it wouldn’t work.’
Initially James helped design a logo for the business coined Fitness Mixes.
James said: ‘Chris initially asked for a logo, and after that we developed a working relationship and he asked me to do the website.’
Throughout the process James and Chris both felt the pressure of starting a business from scratch in five days.
‘Starting a business is hard work especially when you have to come up with an idea for £50,’ said Chris.
‘My previous business cost me thousands to set up.’
On completion of the project, Chris decided to surprise James for his hard work along the way.
Kent-based entrepreneur Chris said: ‘I went to Portsmouth and surprised James by giving him 25 per cent of the business.’
The gesture was a reward for ‘having faith in the project’, according to Chris.
James said: ‘I was really excited to get involved with the idea, I was quite shocked when Chris gave me the 25 per cent as it is something that I had not expected.
‘I can’t believe that I am part of a business.’
Chris and James will use Skype to talk about future marketing and operational issues.
Fitness Mixes was inspired by Chris’ training as a personal trainer and circuit training instructor,
The website allows individual athletes as well as professional fitness businesses to put all their favourite songs in a library that can be matched to training goals.
