STEEL has been cut on a new commercial flagship that will sail passengers between Portsmouth and Fishbourne.

Work has begun to build Wightlink’s new flagship for the route, which the company says will be ‘the most environmentally-friendly ferry to sail the Solent’.

The vessel is part of the firm’s £45m investment programme and will use energy-saving diesel electric hybrid batteries. It will be able to carry 1,000 passengers and up to 178 cars.

The project will also include improvements to boarding ramps at both terminals, with revised timetables in operation between November 1 and 3.
