SHOPPERS will be able to park for free at council-run carparks to support Small Business Saturday this weekend.

Businesses across Portsmouth will also be offering discounts in order to boost customer base in the lead-up to Christmas.

Portsmouth City Council’s cabinet member for planning, regeneration and economic development, Councillor Luke Stubbs, said he hoped the free parking offer would increase the number of shoppers in the city.

Cllr Stubbs said: ‘Portsmouth has plenty of independent businesses, which makes it a really interesting place to shop, and also boosts the local economy.

‘However small businesses can struggle to survive, so shopping local and supporting local businesses really makes a difference.

‘Free parking and discounts are on offer for this event to help encourage more people visit their local shops and see the diversity that’s on their doorstep.’

There will be free parking all day at Wootton Street car park and London Road car park in Cosham, Stubbington Avenue car park in North End and Ashby Place car park in Southsea.

Hiscock Gallery in Stanley Street, Southsea is offering 20 per cent off off everything in store and a free glass of fizz.

Shops offering 10 per cent off include Tango Tea and Glam and Glitz Boutique in Albert Road, Southsea, Adopt a Dolly in Albert Road, Southsea and, Solent Cables in London Road, Portsmouth.

There will be an outdoor market in Palmerston Road, Southsea and an ‘Esty’ market at Aspex Gallery in Gunwharf Quays on Saturday.

The council’s business advice team, with colleagues from Enterprise First, will also be on hand at the Southsea market between 10am and 12:30pm, outside Southsea library. Small businesses are also being offered the chance to have their company website assessed for free by the firm Crimson Crab to make sure it is legally and security compliant.
