A YARN shop is hoping to tackle the growing threat of internet shopping by taking part in a nationwide campaign.
Seeded, in Winter Road, Southsea, is taking part in the new Keep Yarn On Our Streets campaign.
Owner Alexsis Seed said: ‘It is vital for us as a small business that we remind everyone about our bricks and mortar store as we do so much more than just sell wool.
‘Seeded is a home, a community, a place of creativity and inspiration and we felt that our ethos really mirrored that of our Keep Yarn on Our Streets campaign.’
The shop opened in 2014 and launched after the strength of vintage button sales online via its Facebook page.
Alexsis said: ‘Most businesses seem to be following the trend of going from bricks and mortar to online, but Seeded has never been one for following the trend.’
Forty-two yarn shops across the UK have so far signed up to the Keep Yarn On Our Streets initiative, which encourages customers to visit yarn shops.
The first campaign event will see a treasure hunt take place during October.
Each participating shop will have 50 enamel badges with the ‘Keep Yarn On Our Streets’ logo on. These will be sold for £4 or free with a spend of over £40. There will be a prize for the first three people to collect 10 pin badges.
The aim is to encourage yarn lovers to hunt out other participating shops.
Alexsis added: ‘As many businesses fall victim to this difficult economic climate, it can become more and more appealing to ditch the high street all together and move to trading online only.
‘For me, and for other yarn shop owners, that just isn’t an option. While we work in tandem with the internet – and must in order to survive – an independent high street yarn shop is more than just a shop. They have a heart and a soul, and they have to remain on our streets.’
