THERE’S something fishy happening on Albert Road – a new trendy plaice to be has opened its doors.
The Anchor and Malt, a family-run fish and chip shop, has opened in the unit formerly occupied by China China Chinese Takeaway.
Mahmoud Mortez, 30, and his family members – dad Masoud, 60, mum Mandana, 53, and brother Mario, 27 - have come together to create a unique takeaway that they hope everyone can enjoy.
The family, from Southsea, pulled out all the stops to transform the shop and turn it into a trendy business, investing about £40,000.
After opening on July 12, Mahmoud said they had seen a huge demand for their food, which not only includes traditional cod and chips, but also haddock, plaice, calamari, scampi and cod roe.
They’ve also seen huge demand for their fish alternatives, such as hot dogs, veggie burgers, pies, sausage and beef burgers. So much so, that they sold out of hot dogs on their second day of trading.
Mahmoud said they had been delighted to see the positive response on social media, with good reviews flooding in on Facebook.
One review said: ‘Lovely friendly service, yummy fish and chips to die for. The decor is very Albert Road-esque so it’s as much a feast for the eyes. The whole family enjoyed it very much.’
Mario said it had been great to see so many customers returning.
He said: ‘The nicest thing is when they come back.’
Portsmouth South MP Stephen Morgan paid them a visit and wished them luck for the future and warmly welcomed them to Southsea.
The family say they thrive on good customer service and believe this is the secret to their business success.
Mario said: ‘We’ve been told by many of our customers that we do the best chips. We want only the best for our customers so we peel and cut fresh chips everyday, and fry and serve at customers’ request. The feedback has been incredible.’
