New regulations raise ferry fares

FERRY passengers will face a rise in fares as ferry firms look to cope with an increase in costs brought about by a new European regulation that comes into force this week.

From Thursday ships will have to meet strict limits on emissions, meaning they will have to use low-sulphur fuel or fit filters. Experts estimate this will cost the marine industry £300m per year.

This has meant some operators have had to reassess their routes, including DFDS which cancelled its Portsmouth to Le Havre – the last sailing will depart tomorrow.
