PLANS are in place to build a new 153-bedroom hotel at 1000 Lakeside in Portsmouth.

Developer Village has designed a six-storey hotel for the site in North Harbour.

Having a hotel near to the development is key to supporting those businesses

It is believed it will fall into the three to four star hotel rating.

Facilities, which will be available to hotel guests, local residents and employees at Lakeside, will include a leisure club with a 20m swimming pool, gym and fitness studios.

There will be a restaurant, a pub and a Starbucks coffee house, as well as a conference centre and meeting area.

It’s expected to create around 100 new jobs and will be built to the north west of the Porsche garage alongside the A27 Western Road.

Portsmouth City Council leader Donna Jones has led calls for more quality hotels locally.

She said: ‘It’s important because what we know from the most popular business parks in the south east of England is that people prefer to stay in hotels out of town with retailers, restaurants and cafes alongside it.

‘If you look at developments like Whiteley, they had their business park with a retail shopping development. The potential of North Harbour is fantastic.

‘It’s one of the best areas in the city for a growth in new office accommodation. Having a hotel near the development is key to supporting those businesses.’

Planning officers have been meeting the hotel developers to discuss the plans and to iron out any differences.

It is expected to go before the planning committee in the next eight weeks.

Councillor Luke Stubbs, who is in charge of planning at the council, said: ‘I have met Village and I am very positive about their proposal. It fits very well. We have to focus on jobs and growth – Lakeside is the most important area in the city.

‘Much of the old IBM space is full of high-quality office accommodation which generates demand for hotel rooms.

‘I think that it will work well in that location.’

If approved by the council, construction will start early in the new year and it will be open to guests by the end of the year.
