Portsmouth City Council leader attacks Lib Dems for not protecting Savoy site

THE leader of Portsmouth City Council says the Lib Dems are the reason why plans to build retirement flats along the seafront could not be quashed.

Tory councillor Donna Jones said the party didn’t put measures in place when it was in power to ensure developments for the former Savoy buildings site were of high quality. It comes after a planning inspector gave permission for McCarthy & Stone to turn the land into flats, despite concern over the design. It was said the merits outweighed people’s concerns.

Cllr Jones said: ‘I am deeply disappointed that the application on the Savoy building has gone through, but sadly I am not surprised.

‘Unfortunately the Lib Dem administration failed to put in place adequate planning protection, in particularly a supplementary planning document protecting the seafront site.’
