Today The News can reveal the busiest and quietest train stations in the Portsmouth area.

Havant was named as the busiest station in the Portsmouth area with 2,375,640 passengers passing through during 2015/16.

Portsmouth Harbour station had 2,162,417 journeys made while 2,113,681 people used Portsmouth and Southsea station.

In contrast just 119,534 journeys were made at Rowland’s Castle station.

In each case the figure given is the total number of entries and exits from each station.

The Rail Delivery Group, which represents train operators and Network Rail, said the figures demonstrate the need to ‘invest and plan long-term for increasing demand.’

The most used station in the UK was London Waterloo with 99.1 million journeys, according to the Office of Rail and Road.

But Shippea Hill station in Cambridgeshire had only 12 entries and exits - just one a month.
