THE next stage of a £7m scheme to ease congestion will take place.

Contractors working on improving the Asda roundabout at Bedhampton will move on to building the southern half of the new roundabout, installing traffic signals, and putting in extra footpaths and more landscaping.

From December 5 until to Christmas works will move off the main carriageway so the road is kept clear and open to traffic as much as possible.

Work will continue off-road only during this time.

From this week, westbound traffic travelling along Purbrook Way west towards the A3(M) will be moved over on to the old eastbound carriageway.

This will change the exit from the roundabout slightly, but access will be maintained throughout.

The footpath on the south side of Purbrook Way west from the roundabout to the pedestrian crossing will also be closed.

The bus stop will be moved to a temporary location further up the hill, which can be reached via the signal-controlled crossing or the steps into the industrial estate. A pedestrian diversion route will be in place via the new northern footpath.

Public surgeries will continue at the site office every Wednesday from 11am to midday on the field between Hulbert Road and Purbrook Way east. The scheme should be finished by the spring.
