Summer is the most successful for ferries

BRITTANY Ferries has said this summer was its busiest ever as it carried more than half a million passengers.

The firm saw an increase of eight per cent on the same period last year, with all routes to France and Spain performing well.

Mike Bevens, group commercial director said: ‘The strengthening pound has undoubtedly boosted demand this summer for France and Spain which now offer even better value.

‘This is especially true for families staying at, for example, a gite or a campsite, who can also enjoy the convenience of being able to take their own car.

‘Other factors, such as the problems at Calais and unrest in other countries, have contributed to our success, as holidaymakers have sought alternative ways of getting to the continent.

‘Portsmouth, our main gateway to France and Spain, is now seen as the most accessible alternative to Dover.’

Martin Putman, port manager at Portsmouth International Port, added: ‘The strong summer results reflect the increasingly popular appeal for hassle-free holidays and travel from Portsmouth.’
