As the Spinnaker Tower is sponsored for the first time, here are ten things you might not know about Portsmouth’s famous landmark.

It opened in October 2005;

It took four years to build, from November 2001 until October 2005;

Plans for the tower, first called the Milennium Tower, were approved in 1995;

It is 560ft tall and weighs 30,000 tonnes;

Its foundations are buried 50m below ground;

It offers visibility across 23 miles on a clear day

It has 570 steps inside leading to the observation decks;

It has 120 windows across its observation decks;

There were originally three designs for the tower put forward. When asked, 60 per cent of the people of Portsmouth chose the Spinnaker design;

Its concrete platform provides a buffer against impact from a ship.
