A CARGO firm has fought through the hard times and come out fighting.
The freight-forwarding company Mercator Cargo Systems was launched in 1991 and moved to Portsmouth only 17 years ago. Since then it has worked hard to build a portfolio of customers.
Managing director Myles Daly said: ‘Our managing director at the time decided he wanted to move out of London and we felt that Portsmouth was a good place as we had family connections from here.
‘We have since been striving to market ourselves in the area and the hope is that we can gain more customers in the area thanks to the award.’
The company was chosen due to its team, which has banded together in times of crisis to make their business stronger.
In the past few years the business was seriously affected by the recession.
Due to this the founding directors were then forced to hand the business down to others in the family who embraced the challenge.
‘When we were hit by the recession it was really hard year for the whole company but all the team are pleased, it is an achievement of everyone’s hard work,’ added Mr Daly.
‘It makes all the work that we have done as a team worthwhile.’
The team at Mercator Cargo System has the philosophy that everyone should be able to do everyone else’s job.
‘It means that when we are busy the team can be flexible.’
In the next few months the team is hoping to expand its business within the local area.
‘From the success of the award we would like to gain more customers down here and market ourselves further to them,’ said Mr Daly,
Mercator has worldwide representation and a global network of freight forwarders of 312 offices in over 90 countries worldwide.
